"Contemplating Hever Castle"
Started: 14/12/2024 - Finished: 18/01/2025 - acrylic on canvas - H16" x W24"
$300
Hever Castle, in Kent (south of London), was the girlhood home of Anne
Boleyn, 2nd wife of Henry VIII. Henry later gave the castle to Anna of
Cleves, his fourth wife who used it as a residence. The loggia is part
of a large "Italian Garden" built between 1904-1908 by American
millionaire William Waldorf Astor (Lord Astor). Before Astor's time,
the area was marshland.
The view of the castle is from the southeast. Between the castle and bench are a waterway and a huge yew maze which was built in 1906 by William Waldorf Astor, who bought the castle in 1903 and created the
maze using over 1,000 yew trees imported from the Netherlands.
